Hunting Areas

The Grundy County Conservation Board manages several areas for public hunting. These areas are restricted hunting which means that hunting is restricted to certain species of game. Hunting of wild turkey is prohibited. Bowhunting for whitetail deer is allowed by permit only. Likewise, those areas open to trapping of furbearers are by permit only. This is a 53-acre area containing native grass seedlings, tree & shrub plantings, and wildlife food plots. The woodland trail has had extensive spring wildflower plantings and is a lovely area to walk in late April and May. Many different tree species are labeled to aid in identification. Hunting is permitted for pheasant, cottontail rabbit, and gray partridge.

This 50-acre area contains two restored wetlands, native grass areas, tree & shrub plantings, and wildlife food plots. Hunting is permitted with non toxic shot only for pheasant, cottontail rabbit, gray partridge, and migratory waterfowl.

This 38-acre wildlife area was acquired to provide much needed public hunting area but also provides for non-consumptive uses such as birdwatching, hiking, etc. Approximately one half of the area is seeded to native grasses and flowers. The other half will see the cropland converted to future tree and shrub plantings.

The Green Wing Wetland is a wildlife/hunting area consisting of 17 acres and is located north of the Copley-Strohbehn Preserve.  Hunting of whitetail deer is by bowhunting permit only that is issued by the Conservation Board. Contact the Conservation Board office at (319)345-2688 for details.

Approximately 130 acres of this area is open to hunting. Hunting is permitted with non toxic shot only for waterfowl, pheasant, partridge, and cottontail rabbit. The North Fork of Black Hawk Creek meanders through the area and generally forms the east boundary of the hunting area.  Click here for more information on this area.

This 46-acre wildlife area is open to small game & waterfowl hunting. Hunting of whitetail deer is by bowhunting permit only that is issued by the Conservation Board. The Holland Marsh was a gift to Grundy County through funds contributed by Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and private individuals and organizations. Largely a grassland area, it also contains several wetlands and small winter cover plantings.

The Black Hawk Creek winds its way through this 67-acre area and provides fishing. Hunting is permitted for pheasant, cottontail rabbit, and gray partridge.

Named for the southfork of the Beaver Creek that meanders across the area, this 42-acre wildlife area is open to hunting for game under the state’s hunting seasons and limit EXCEPT for deer. Hunting of whitetail deer is by bowhunting permit only that is issued by the Conservation Board. Contact the Conservation Board office at (319)345-2688 for details. The area is a mix of grassland with natural and man made wetlands scattered throughout.

Approximately 70 acres of this park are open to hunting of pheasant, cottontail rabbit, and gray partridge. The Wolf Creek that meanders through the area provides fishing.  Click here for more information on this area.
