In Iowa, official registrations of births, deaths and marriages began in 1880. Copies of birth, death and marriage records from 1880 to 1920 and 1942 to the present are available for viewing during regular business hours. County recorders do not have code authority to have on record single-parent births prior to July 1, 1995, adoptions, and records ordered sealed by a court of law, or vital records between the years 1921 to 1941.
